The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), is the world air sports federation and was founded in 1905. It is a non-governmental and non-profit making international organisation with the basic aim of furthering aeronautical and astronautical activities worldwide.
The FAI is now an organisation of some 100 member countries. FAI activities include the establishment of rules for the control and certification of world aeronautical and astronautical records.
The FAI establishes regulations for the air sporting events organised by member countries throughout the world.
In 2005 the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) will celebrate its first century of existence.
The organisation was founded on 14 October 1905 in Paris, and its world headquarters was established in Lausanne, the Olympic Capital, in 1998. To mark its special connections with these cities the FAI will hold several events throughout 2005 in both Paris and in Lausanne. Other celebration events and air sports will also be celebrated in other parts of the world.
